Everywhere around us we hear people say different things about what we can do to strip that fat and lose weight. They sound so sure of what they are saying we often find it difficult to question what is being said even though it may sound a bit odd to us. Well I’ve done some searching because I too had questions and found some interesting things which I would like to share.

Myth 1: Skipping meals will help you lose weight.

I’m sure we’ve all tried this and felt so hungry we found ourselves snacking during the day and feeling even hungrier by the end of the day. The reality is that skipping meals is bad for you. The human body is a fine tuned instrument and needs everything in balance to function properly. Your body registers that there is less food than the day before and starts preparing itself for starvation by storing extra fat (the opposite of what you want). Because you have starved yourself during the day and feel hungrier by the end of the day, you eat larger meals to compensate.

Little and often is the key. Make sure you eat breakfast and eat smaller meals during the day but eat more often than you would e.g. have 5 small meals instead of 3 larger ones, this can include healthy snacks of fruit and nuts. This gives your body a constant supply of calories and can increase your metabolic rate so you strip that fat and lose weight effectively.

Myth 2: You shouldn’t eat after 8 pm.

If this were true it would mean an end to evening meals with friends or loved ones at your favourite restaurant.

The reality is that you can eat at whatever time you want and not have to feel guilty. You do need to think about what you are eating, the portion size and whether you do any exercise to burn off the extra calories or whether you are a total couch potato. Your body will inevitable store some of the calories you eat so that you don’t run out of energy but also to make sure your body can generate the amino acids and proteins it needs.

If you do have to snack whilst watching your favourite TV show try to limit how much you are having (don’t eat the whole tub of Ben & Jerry’s in one go)

Myth 3:  I can eat whatever I want and still lose weight.

I used to say this and you know what, I was talking rubbish. It all caught up with me one day. Lol.

Don’t get me wrong, it is possible to eat any kind of food you want and lose weight but the reality is that you need to burn more calories than you eat in order to lose weight. It’s as simple as – limit the number of calories you eat every day and/or increase your daily physical activity. Eating smaller portions and avoiding/eating less foods that have too many saturated fats should help with this. Don’t forget to increase your exercise as well, here’s some stuff that worked for me: brisk walking, hoovering and running after the children.

Myth 4:  Low-fat or fat-free means no calories.

Not because something says it is low fat or fat free means there are no calories. Many processed low-fat or fat-free foods have just as many calories as the full-fat versions of the same foods sometimes they even have more calories as they may contain added sugar, flour, or starch thickeners to improve flavour and texture after the fat is removed. These ingredients can add calories. Try to eat much less of these if you can.

Myth 5:  Fast foods are bad for you and should be avoided

I don’t know about you but I love to have fast food from time to time.
Fast foods can be part of a healthy weight-loss program if you follow some simple rules.

  • Don’t super-size your meals
  • Cut down on soda
  • Choose salads and grilled foods, lots of fast food places have these options
  • Choose sauces or toppings that are less fatty e.g. choose salsa instead of cheese, bacon or mayonnaise
  • Order French fries and fried chicken only once in a while as they are high in fat and calories
  • Order small portions when ordering fried foods
  • If you order large portions be sure to split it with a friend (no not your imaginary one, lol)

Hope I’ve given you some food for thought on how you can strip that fat
